“Our love is more powerful than the United States of America,” proclaims Tom, who is plainly, passionately, and wholeheartedly in love with Emilio, his partner of five years. Unfortunately, Tom’s touching sentiment also has a certain amount of wishful thinking behind it: Emilio is a Venezuelan citizen, who has been fighting deportation for years.
Through Thick and Thin examines the trials of gay and lesbian bi-national couples as they struggle against U.S. immigration laws, living and loving across oceans and time zones. As they fight to be together, these couples find their affections growing alongside righteous indignation: How can a love strong enough to survive such great distance be so easily dismissed by a prejudiced government? While they face many individual problems and find varying ways to cope with their dilemmas, all of the couples must confront certain issues. Planning for the future is near impossible: purchasing a “dream home” makes little sense for partners who may be torn apart at any moment on a court’s whim; legal cases loom large and impose an unnatural pace to their relationships; and each moment spent together is imbued with the palpable urgency of a ticking clock. As their extraordinary stories progress, it is impossible not to admire the perseverance of these ordinary people in intimate relationships, who, against all odds, believe their love will carry them through. — ILYA TOVBIS
