Queer & Current: New LGBT films from Current TV

Program: Shorts

Current TV, a TV station established by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt in San Francisco, takes the idea of a curatorial public a big step forward with a challenge to its audience: If you don’t see what you like, make it yourself, and we’ll air it. This collection of LGBT-themed short films was made by — and voted onto — Current TV by its audience members.
Blood Brothers depicts the unlikely friendship between a former skinhead and the man he nearly killed for being gay. We Belong is the story of two high schoolers exposing the discrimination they face every day. Coming Out Mormon challenges the tenets of an article of faith. Other Loves consists of interviews in Oaxaca, Mexico, discussing the cultural status of being gay. Jason Johnson follows the contrary viewpoints of a student and the president of the conservative University of Cumberlands. Fight for Marriage depicts rival factions of constituencies on the issue of a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage. The Sky Did Not Fall focuses on the love of a newly married lesbian couple. Marina and her Moms highlights the activist stance of a girl whose mothers are bi-national, adding visa issues to their tenuous legal status. Finally, Pastor Jamie Welcoming Church illuminates a truly open church. —SEAN UYEHARA
