8: The Mormon Proposition lifts the mask of California’s Prop 8 to reveal the overwhelming out-of-state support of the Utah-based Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Narrated by Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black, who grew up gay in the Mormon Church, stories of real people show the devastating emotional impact caused by the church’s decision to throw its full might — and pocketbook — into the personal and political affairs of another state’s citizens.

The dramatic backbone of the story is of a couple raised Mormon who married in 2008, including the mother of one of the couple, a Mormon gay marriage activist. Also making an appearance is former GOP consultant Fred Karger, out leader of high-profile efforts to expose the Mormon influence on Prop 8, who provides classic “follow the money” moments to show how the LDS raised millions from out-of-state contributors. With an unprecedented six screenings at Sundance, 8: The Mormon Proposition stirred emotions on both sides of the debate, drawing supporters and protesters to the Utah festival. The local filmmakers bring the debate back home for this hotly anticipated Bay Area premiere.

Always My Son chronicles the transformation of Ed from a self-described “macho Mexican” to cofounder of his town’s first LGBT youth support group after his son comes out. Director Vivian Kleiman lets a straightforward story speak for itself in this touching and inspiring short documentary. — ROBERT O’SHAUGHNESSY
