When will Tommy learn not to fall in love with straight guys? He’s a cute lawyer with a lot to offer, but he’s fallen hard for shy, brooding Daniel. The two went to the same college, a few years apart, and it turns out that Tommy has been crushing for a while. They connect over lacrosse, their alma mater, and Dostoevsky—the beginning of a seemingly doomed relationship.

After a night together, Daniel announces that he’s engaged to a woman. Despite his obvious feelings for Tommy, he’s determined to marry Jen and bury any other urges deep. When they reconnect at the gym, Daniel reluctantly introduces Tommy to Jen, an adorable, endearing civil lawyer who instantly bonds with Tommy. Tommy invites Daniel to a gathering of college alumni—or that’s the pretense. Instead, it’s an intimate country getaway with just the two of them. As they fall deeper in love, Daniel, who also loves Jen, still plans to marry and swears he’ll never be unfaithful. But he just can’t seem to shake his feelings for Tommy. More a coming of age story than a coming out story, The One gracefully examines how complicated life can be when love pulls us in opposite directions.
